- I don't know about reliability of the system, but their site's usability is pathetic. I opened a triple account (savings, demat and online-trading) with them without doing much research. But now I regret it and it's just inertia that is keeping me with their trading site. I'm not a web developer, but I can't see anyone with even a basic understanding of usability can ever allow that website to go public is something I cannot understand. I will tell you a few of the UI issues I have seen: 1. Their site does not work with any browser other than Internet Explorer. Even with IE, navigating the menus etc, is a pain. 2. The portfolio functionality is the worst I can see. If you do a trade, you have to login again on the same day, after trading hours, and then search for your trades that day and select it to be added it to your portfolio. You cannot do it next day. From the next day onwards, for you to find the trade, you have to search in trade history and there is no way for one to add a trade in history to their portfolio automatically. 3. While on the trade history, you can only search for trades in 15 day windows at a time. So if you want to see all your trades in a year, (say for tax statement purpose), you have to search for about 104 times - each time with a 15-day period. Even if the total trades you have done in the year is only 10. 4. Given points 2 and 3, it is a must for one to maintain a separate ledger of their trades and keep it up-to-date regularly. For regular traders it may work fine, but if you're a part-time investor like me, it is another ritual. Besides, a portfolio management service is a very basic service that a trading site should offer. These are just few things I recall off the top of my head. But there are many others. Their customer service is also rather bad. I have sent them a few emails with the issues, but their indifferent response makes me think they're not serious about this business. I would definitely advice anyone against opening an online trading account with HDFC.
