Stock Markets Exposed

Need a little advice regarding buying/trading stocks?

I recently was given a tip on an IPO but didnt take it seriously and missed a great opprotunity. Now I'd like to start trading/buying stocks but Im not too familiar with new IPO's to begin with and dont have knowledge as to what to watch for. Any advice?
