Stock Markets Exposed

The stock market?

I would like to start buying, trading , and selling some stocks but I don't know anything about the stock market. I've been to a couple of site (like eTrade and Nasdaq) but all the charts and the rising and falling in the percentages are just confusing to me. Right now I'm just so confused that I don't even know where to start looking for answers. Can somebody break it down so that I can at least understand the basics, or can someone refer me to a site or a book that can really help?

  1. Buy a book called "Investing For Dummies" Read it for knowledge, and when starting out, Stick to No-Load, Balanced Mutual funds, Banks in Canada Sell Them, Maybe USA as well.
  2. Yeah start with the book "Investing for dummies" and in the meantime go to Yahoo Finance and watch the market, and get familiar with the process. Starts at 10 a.m, and you basically type in a ticker of your company like MSFT for microsoft, and you see how much the stocks go up and down depending on sales. The charts just show the prices the stock are selling for, the more confusing part is understanding the stock balance, but the book clears it up. =]
  3. Take a course in investments at your local college, or at least read an introduuctory textbook. For someone like you, it is best to simply invest in passive index funds.
