How do people make money using the stock market?

1. I wish I knew, but you should google the question. If I knew, I suppose I would keep it a secret, so that others would allow me to make a lot and not have to share it with others!!
2. There are lots and lots and lots of ways to make (or lose) money in the stock market - IPOs, derivatives, selling short, going long, mutual funds, common and preferred stocks, and so on and so on and so on. But the basic advice remains the same - "Buy low, sell high." And never forget that the broker and the taxman take their cuts too!
