  1. If you have no idea about the stock market, I would strongly recommend that you stay as far away from it as you can. If you really do want to play with the stock market, do these things: 1. Never use any money that you cannot afford to lose. If you wouldn't bet it at a casino, you better not put it on stocks. 2. Start with mutual funds. They use others that are knowledgeable about stocks to make the investment choices. 3. Never, NEVER, take the advice of anyone that will profit from your investment. (Stockbrokers...I'm looking your way here...) If they get a commission from selling it, there is a reason. And, if anyone on this answer board tells you that you can make money in the stock market without knowing anything about it, they are lying. Get a good book about investing and personal finance and read it. Start looking at the Investors Business Daily, Barrons, Wall Street Journal. Oh, and Vanguard has an outstanding education web page. The link to it is below.
  2. Not this week - unless you have enough capital to ride out a very volatile market. Money is made in the stock market by investing over a LONG term. You cannot put money in, hit something lucky, and make a ton of green. If so, everyone would be doing it. I am OK, since I have had money in for a LONG time - and I have it professionally managed. I still get squeamish when we have a week like this one! And yes, I DO own a crystal ball - it's pretty to look at, but tells me nothing. Do not attempt to teach yourself to become a day trader. You will lose every penny that way lies madness. Try EARNING money in something in which you have skills. Then thinks about cautiously investing a small amount, cumulatively over a long term. Look at I every year or so - smile when you are about 60. I am retiring this year at 58. I was smart enough to hire SMARTER people to manage my money for the last 35 years. Started with very little - now am more than OK.
  3. If you have no idea than it is definitely the wrong approach "to make money". First off I would start by trading stocks on paper first, before starting to trade real stocks. Right now is not a good time to start with the markets going down so please do not buy stocks now. The stock market isn't made for you to get a lot of money fast, it's more of a long term investment. Only very few people make a lot of money short term, most people lose money. Always keep in mind. For every Millionaire in the stock market there are 100 people who lost 10000.
  4. why does every one think they are going to make money on the stock market -- the odds are not as tough a reno but you have to work a lot harder at it if you want to make real money -- right now would be a good time for you to go to the library and read up on it -- because i would now advise anyone to invest till the market settles down a little maybe three or four months!!!
  5. You can't. You questions gives the answer. You have to know what you are doing to make money dealing with stocks in the way that you are referring to. Go to school, learn about it if you are interested, and then you can give it a try.
