How has the economic recession led to harder times for the needy?
I am preparing a short inspirational speech to give, with the topic being donations to the needy for the upcoming holiday season. I am trying to think of some things to say, as far as why the state of the economy has led to the needy becoming even more in need. The only thing I can really think of is higher food prices. Other than that, gas prices have gone down...the stock market losses don't really affect the needy. And most of the job cuts don't either. So if you can think of anything, please let me know!! Thanks!

- Yes, it has led to harder times for nearly everybody. Credit lines have been cut or decreased...therefore less expenses can be relied on credit. Mortgage payments / rent have increased, it's harder than ever before to sustain a roof over your head. Job security has decreased...with the unemployment rate so high, someone that is more qualified than you and has been dropped from their high-paying job can be taking your job that you've had for 10+ yrs.
- You can mention the majority of low income families have jobs that were in the manufacturing industry or blue collar workers and since this sector has been hit about as hard as any other, this means the already cumbersom job of taking care of yourself and your family if you're in the lower income level has taken your job or at the very least threatened your job. These families already live paycheck to paycheck with absolutely no safety net and often don't even have family or friends that are in any better position to offer help. Also, donations to community programs are way down so the amount of families that can receive emergency help is down.
- The number of families/individuals needing help has gone up (due to unemployment) but the donations are down. So each family getting help from food shelves, Toys for Tots, etc. will get less.
