Stock Markets Exposed

We have an mennonite client who wants to know if he can check stock market indexes over the phone?

Is there a number that has a voice ticker? Mainly for Nasdaq, but he has some allocated to S&P. He obviously cannot check it over the internet or television. The telephone is his only option, the paper doesn't give him up to date stats. I'm not a stockbroker, I'm a marketing product manager that has to deal with customer service issues at times. I could give him the quotes, but I'm not always around or available.

Public Comments

  1. are you his stockbroker? can't you tell him?
  2. No and I suspect even brokerage account phone lines that sell index funds would not be current since index mutual funds can only trade after the closing bell so intraday activity is irrelevant. If the client owned diamonds or spydrs then a brokerage line may give out quotes, but you would almost certainly get a live broker and any trades would be expensive. A firm covering such a cost would have to charge a commission that makes intraday trading too expensive anyway. Just a note, it is impossible to trade a mutual fund on price since the price is determined after the market closes and not during the market. If the client holds index funds intraday quotes are not that meaningfull since funds never actually hold the actual exact index anyway due to trading costs of doing so, they are close approximations, but an index fund can rise even if the index falls and vice versa.
