  1. take Bear Sterns as an example. Say you bought it over $80--today you cannot sell it for that much. You would take a big loss when you sell it.
  2. It's very easy to lose money in the stock market. You sometimes wait and hold onto a stock that has lost money, but the opportunity cost is that you missed out on a different stock that grew at a fast rate while you were waiting for your stock to come back to par (the break even point). At times, the stock never comes back; it either blew up or slowed into oblivion. Sometimes it is prudent to sell. When NSTK fell from $14 to $7, a lot of investors had an opportunity to sell at $10. If you took it, you were disappointed but you cut your losses and it was great. If you sold TEVA, you made a huge mistake. The stock's trading at $45.50 per share. Consider learning about preferred stock; that's very interesting. It's very humbling. It's still risky but something that is worth learning.
