Do stocks go up or down during the holidays?
Im new and confused on the stock market. So i dont even know if it's kosher to ask this question without ending up like Martha Stewart but in general do stocks go up or down during the holidays? Or is it even applicable? Im sure it depends on the stock and its all a gamble but can anyone help me? is it a great thing to have stocks around the holidays? If my fingers are crossed to see my stocks boost up do u think the holidays is a good time for that to happen?

- Yes, they do. Some (brokers) send in orders and wait to be processed on next trading day, usually due to the up & down in foreign markets while it's holidays here. Not every market watch site reveals that info.
- Short term trades many times close out their positions prior to weekends, much less holidays. There is no telling what might happen when the market is closed that could effect prices on the opening detrimentally. I do not know if you have noticed, but earnings announcements normally are issued when the market is closed. If the announcement is bad news, when the stock opens trading, it might open 5 points lower or perhaps even more. If the announcement is exceptionally good, the stock might open 5 points higher. So, yes, in effect stocks do have the ability to rise and fall during the times when the market is closed. Another thing to be aware of is that when the markets are closed in the U S, they are not closed in Japan, China, India, Europe. Events anywhere in the world can affect stock prices in the U S. An extreme sell off in Japan can have an effect on U S markets or even the news that the Japan central bank has raised interest rates.
