I gave my father 16 shares of fdx stock in 1986. What is the value now?
I can't figure out how to determine how to calculate the value of a stock over time. When someone says "if you had purchased $10,000 of wal-mart stock in 1980 you would have $2,767,000 now. I made those numbers up, but you know what I mean. So, I gave my dad this stock, and now I want to know what it is worth. He and I disagreed about my investing in stock vs. holding on to some ranch land and I want him to know how much he has made on this investment. Thank you!

- FDX closed Friday at $109.68 a share up considerably in the past five years. I couldn't tell you if it has split since 1986. This would make a big difference.
- As far as I know just check to see what the stock is worth currently and multiply that by the number of shares. In this case FDX is currently priced at $109.68 per share and with 16 shares that's $1754.88 assuming the stock has never split in the 21 years since then.
- Stock of Fed Ex is worth right now $ 109 dollars and cents ! If you bought 10,000 shares of this stock . at whatever price, it is now worth adbout a Million Dollars -
- FDX is $109.68 right now a share. Did the stocks split since then? Look for your fathers dividends paper, see if it says how many shares he has now.
- Well, is it in a brokerage account? Do you get monthly statements? Look at them and see the balance! Even if we looked up the current value, there may have been splits over the years. Your 16 shares might be 32 shares now, or more. We'd also need to know what was done with any dividends earned over the years. Were they reinvested in stock? Are they sitting in a money market account in the brokerage account? It is almost never a good investment to buy a single stock. Mutual Funds are much better investments and they are diversified and carry less risk. I would agree that owning land is probably a much better investment than some random stock.
- FedEx has gone up about 700% since December of 1986, which includes the 87 Crash, the S&P 500 is up about 600% in the same time frame. I am not sure how much the piece of land has went up but I am fairly confident that the S&P 500 has outperformed Real Estate as a whole in the same time period. Hope that helps.
- The adjusted price for dividends and splits appears to be around 14-15 dollars a share back in Jan 86. Therefore you must have given him stock worth about $240 dollars at the time. Today it would be worth about $1750. So lets say $250 and $1750. Thats about a 600% rate of return (1750-250)/250 *100% = 600%. So in 21 years you had a compounded growth rate of about 9.5-10% I am guessing. Ranch land appreciation can be all over the map depending where its located. I have always heard that pretty typical ranch land appreciates at about 3-6% in value each year as a very loose average. Course you must factor in the productivity that could occur through farming/ranch activities, leasing options, government subsidies and back out such things as property tax. Who is right and who is wrong....very hard to say. Depends alot on the ranch land in question. Real Estate can be a very valuable and rewarding investment vehicle if you know what your doing, course so can a well placed investment.
