Has anyone ever made a ton of money using a value investing approach to options, especially using LEAP options? Regarding stock investing methods, do certain methods work better than others with certain amounts of money? Will investing philosophies(value, growth, technical, etc) work differently depending on how much is invested? For example, does value work better than growth for certain levels of money - with a small amount invested, does one philosophy work better than the others? Or - is this question unsound and there are too many variables or does the answer depend entirely upon one's opinion of what works?
I gave my father 16 shares of fdx stock in 1986. What is the value now? I can't figure out how to determine how to calculate the value of a stock over time. When someone says "if you had purchased $10,000 of wal-mart stock in 1980 you would have $2,767,000 now. I made those numbers up, but you know what I mean. Question about value investing.? i am reading a book called Value Investing from graham to buffett and beyond. is it a good book? where do i go from here? i want to try hands on things like analyzing FS, but i do not exactly know what im doing is right, for example appraising current assets and so on, evaluating macroeconomic drivers. it all seems so ambiguous. like too many subjectiveness. in day trading, i am completely mechanical. in analyzing stocks for investing, i find there are no strict borders, and the effort may not pay off at least after a year or two, or even longer. one key worry i have is, how do i accurately determine the intrinsic value when thers so much subjectivity to this process. once i have a good measure of intrinsic value, where to go from there? experienced investors must feel some level of confidence about their analysis, i currently do not feel it. thank you.

Is it better to be a value investor or a growth investor? Hello everyone. I'm just starting investing in stocks and wanted to see if anyone could give me some advice. There is just so much information out there that it's really hard to take in everything. I read in some books that the best way to invest is to find undervalued companies that have good fundamentals and will eventually come back to it's true value; meaning you will eventually make a big return once it gets back to it's true price(Value Investing). I also hear on the other hand that the best way to invest is to get in on companies with great upside like Google, Baidu, Blackstone, etc.(Growth investing). The problem with that is...I'm scared that once I do get in, that I will have got in too late. For all you investors out there that have been doing it for awhile, what do you suggest? I know Warren Buffett and Phil Town are all about the Value Investing so I can't go wrong with that philosophy. However, I know that there are others that are big on upside. Help!!! Thanks

what are some good small-cap value stocks to invest in over the next few months? Why are you just assuming that I'll take any answer I get and run over to my Fidelity account and invest right away? I've already been trading in the stock market for over 2 years and have probably made a larger return on my interest than you have in your savings account. Maybe a small-cap value stock that'll appreciate in the next few months is impossible for you, but don't assume that because you can't find success others can't find it. And phishing in random areas of the net is one of the best ways to discover new options at the same time as insiders. If you don't have anything interesting to say, then stop lecturing detectives on their method of sleuthing.

How do you find a businesses intrinsic value??? I want to invest in some stocks and it seems investing in a buisnss that has a low intrisic value would be good
Why would a stock be worth anything? I have been trading and investing in stocks for many years, but I still have a question that I hope somebody can answer. The number of companies in the market is growing everyday more and more raising the number of outstandig shares to trillions. A single company can also make second offerings diluting that way the value of its stocks. If this process of endless dilution doesn't end, and it looks to me like it'll never end, why would stocks be worth anything in the future? The present value of future cash flow? No Way!! You have never traded stocks! Stocks are worth their price, which can change for no reasons.
What is your school of thought for investing? Currently, I am reading two books on investing of opposite strategies. On one hand, I am reading Jim Cramer's Real Money book where he believes the market is not 100% efficient and there is money to be made that beats the indexes by a decent return. Year after year, these are found in the small cap, less discussed stocks. On the other hand, I am reading "A Random Walk Down Wallstreet," which discusses investing behavior and how people through the centuries have been burnt by "castles in the sky." This book recommends value investing the Warren Buffet way in ETF's, etc. Warren Buffet said in his 2005 letter (paraphrased), "Investors have had a string of good returns but have learned any number multiplied by zero equals zero." Basically, I am just looking for some conversation on which school of thought you believe in and why. Thanks in advance and I apologize for any spelling/grammar errors. Ed, what would I do without you.
Does investing in stocks have a positive or negative effect on the economy? Supposedly, investing large amounts of money in post-IPO stocks simply locks that money away, and pulls it out of circulation. Is that true, and what effect does this have on the economy as a whole? (Is a lot of people with a lot of wealth sitting on their money, with it invested in stocks and only growing value for said people, a good thing or a bad thing?)
Stock market, how & why they invent it? the point of stockmarket is solely secondary market, right? keyword: secondary market, share value changes, traditional investing, stockmarket=secondary market Why there's secondary market where the stock value could change to represent company progression? In traditional way, when you invest to my business directly, you got your share of profit, your share value become bigger or lower depending on company progression (In case of separation of partners). My point is, How and why they invent the stock market, where money goes wild in secondary market? Why not just own shares in company, have profit once a year (depends on how many shares do you have), that just it: the share value don't change, only matter: quantity? 10 pts. for good or detailed answer In respond to MICHO: I don't think the stocks value doesn't really reflect the company value. Why not just calculate the the company value, thus this automatically change the stock value every morning? Why the stock value determine by investors, thus reflect the supply and demand? thx! anyone could answer Correction: It doesn't really reflect company value

Investing tips?? Hi, I am in my early twenties and started working after college for couple years already. I would like to accumulate wealth as early as possible and hopefully have an early retirement. After having saved enough money, and having had some surplus funds, I thought it would be financially wise to start investing this surplus fund for long-term growth. I have an investment horizon of more than 10 years, so I decide to invest in stocks for the highest possible long-term returns. I intend to take a value-investing approach towards my investments. Does anyone out there have any undervalued stock recommendations? Thanks
Did you study the stock market in school ? Did it do you any good ? Do you understand that value investing is how the pros like Buffett get rich . They do not even teach Buffett and Graham investing except at Columbia U.
What are the pros and cons of the efficient market theory? I am a finance major in school and was recently talking to an investment professional and he was expaining to me that value investing is impossible because the stock market is totally efficient. In my studies I have read that Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffet became successful by value investing. I just don't don't think the stock market can but completely efficient, even if every bit of information was available to everyone.
How does compounding relate to investing in stocks? I am just beginning to learn about investing and am familiar with the concept of compounding. I hear experts talk about starting early so that compounding can work its magic. I can see how it works on say a savings account that pays monthly interest. But when the experts suggest investing in stocks because of the higher rate of return I'm not sure how compounding can apply since stocks don't pay interest they just increase (or decrease) in market value and only some pay regular dividends.

Is investing in a stock Haraam? I know this question was asked a few hours ago, but explain why and how it would be Haraam? If research is done to make sure that the stock does not use interest and it is not a Haraam company (i.e. McDonalds), then what's wrong with it? If you say because it's like gambling, profit/loss, then wouldn't that make buying gold Haraam? What about a house? These things are also subject to increase/decrease in value!
Why do some of the Nanotech stocks have such a high price in their chart history? I am newly into investing in nanotechnology stocks. When I look at their stock value charts some show very high stock prices a few years back. Advanced Nanotech, AVNA shows a value in the thousands back in 2000-2001. Biosantee Pharma, BPA and Arrowhead Research, ARWR also show high values in the past. Does anyone have an idea why this is.

Recession & Stock Market-Correlation? Am I not getting this? Analysts say that since the US Economy is slowing down we should invest in defensive stocks like mcdonalds, procter gamble, etc. Then how come for about a week they have been going down? So does that mean even though we are in a so called recession these stock values will go up? same with agriculture-agu, mon, pot-these stocks have been going down as well... so when will these stocks start to pick up in value?
Help! What are good investments today? I want only to keep the value of my money...? Help, I am losing all my hard earned savings! My portfolio: 30% in cash. Interest rate is lower than inflation so cash steadily loses its value. Add dollar's slide abroad and you have over 10% loss p.a. 10% in Icelandic currency that yields 15%. Perhaps the interest rate is higher than inflation but in the last two weeks alone that currency lost 20% to US$! Experts are saying it will drop further. 15% in stocks. Invested in an index fund which is now down 10% in dollar terms (20% real terms). And I read that stocks are still over-valued. 5% in gold and oil through a forex broker. Volatility is so high that my deposit got wiped out twice even though commodities are going up long term. They are now very expensive, should I still hold them and hope to make up the loses? 40% in property. I purchased it a year ago in cash, no mortgage. It's value is dropping since then in $ terms and in real terms even more... Seems there are no good investments there days. How come?

What gives stocks value? I have been struggling with this question over the last few weeks after reading an article by Andy Kessler. He argues against the value of buying stocks with dividends since it is a signal (in his mind) that the company is giving dividends because they have no other projects to invest in that would provide further gains in income. In fact, it seems like he argued against giving dividends at all. I tend to agree with him on that one, or at least a little bit. However, if I open up a small business, I do so primarily for income. Therefore, if I buy a stock with no dividends, I am looking for capital gains resulting from an increase in demand for the stock. Let's say if a company NEVER gives out dividends, then it seems like people just buy the stock for capital gains, but capital gains result from people buying the stock (i.e. demand), which results in capital gains appreciation. Seems a little circular and that stocks have no fundamental value in that case, only pieces of paper.
Does portfolio proportion, when dealing with stocks, refer to number of shares or the value of the shares? I am working on an investing activity where I have a certain number of stocks. I have looked up their current market price and calculated the total vlue of each stock. Now, I need to know the portfolio proportion of each stock. Will this be: #shares of ea. stock/total number of shares or value of ea. stock/total value of all the stocks? Thanks for your help!! Also, we have to pick a stock to make a mock purchase. Once of the questions relates to what the analysts say about the stock. It says that this can come from the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Morningstar, etc. However, when I try to look at what the analysts say at this site, you have to have a subscription. Does anywhere know where I can go to find what the analysts say about a particular stock for free?
We live in America, but have stock in the UK, please help!? We live in the US, but my husband works for a UK-based company and was recently awarded stocks by this company. This stock (trading in the UK) has decreased in value rapidly since we received it a few months ago, meaning that we're paying taxes on the value awarded, but the shares are only worth what we owe in taxes for them :(. In any case, we're trying to determine ... should we keep the stock and hope it goes back up? Should we sell all of the stock now before it drops any more? Should we keep some of the stock, but sell a percentage and re-invest in other UK stocks to diversify our UK-portfolio? Our other thought is to sell all the stock and invest the money in an apartment / home in the UK that we would keep over time in hopes of long term appreciation. We plan to continue living in the US for now, but may at some point want to re-locate to the UK so it will be nice to have some money there. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! The question is quite general and less about the particular stock (yes, it's a good company - tech co actually - with lots of work 'in the pipeline', growing and expanding, etc.). Really, I'm trying to figure out, is it bad to have all our UK stocks in one company or should we diversify? If we diversify, should we sell now while this stock is low and buy other stocks now? Or is Real Estate in the UK typically just a better bet than the stock market? Looking for pros and cons and just generally informative types of answers to help in the decision-making process - Thanks :)
Stock Valuation Question. Please help? Swinton Mining has seen its business slowly winding down. It recenty paid a dividend of $1.80 per share, but analysts expect the dividend to decrease by 4% per year. If Swinton's required rate is 9.5%, what is the value of the stock? A. 15.34 B. 12.80 C. 14.55 D. 10.92 E. 11.79 What is Swinton Mining's current dividend yield? A. 12.50% B. 13.50% C. 11.50% D. 15.00% E. 14.00% You would expect S.M.'s dividend yield to (Increase, Decrease, or Stay the same) over time? What is S.M.'s expected stock price in one year? A. 12.29 B. 13.55 C. 11.20 D. 12.76 E. 10.26 S.M. is a negative growth stock - it's dividend is declining each year, and so is its stock price. If you buy and hold....and hold...and hold...? If you buy a stock, invest in a mutual fund, etc....and deposit money into your investment account every few months...and you hold for say, 10-15 years, when are you earning the dividend? I mean that, if the stocks value goes up and the price of the stock goes up, you have profited, but when does this money come into your hands? Is it when you sell the stock, or with every up and down.....if I were to cash out in 10 years, my profit would be based on only the selling price at that time and the initial buying price, right? So the ups and downs will not factor into my dividends as long as there is a steady and slow growth over the years? I know this is a basic question with a simple answer, I am new to the world of investing and still learning...Basically what I want to know is, if you buy and hold, you won't earn til you sell at a high price, correct? How do some people make money monthly from investing, is it because they simply trade/speculate on a short term basis?
The price of gold has taken a steep upturn does this in any way have any ties with future stock market crashes People usually invest in gold when they are unsure of the stock market so stop investing in the stock market and so shares loose value or so I heard
Is it basically safe to use a Stable Value fund in my 401(k) as a substitute for a money market fund? Ignore for a moment that this is a retirement account (401k). I want to be very conservative with my balance but do not want to withdraw. About 15 fund choices, including s&p 500 index fund and a basic bond fund. Also a Stable Value Fund. Am currently using Stable Value fund since we don't have a money market type fund. I know Stable Value is invested in GICs etc and not treasuries, and that share price of $1 is not guaranteed. But given the limited options of funds, if I'm looking to mimic a money market, is the Stable Value the best choice? Or should I be in a bond fund? Or is diversified between bond and stock index funds going to be the best way to maintain very stable balance? Thanks.
Will Yahoo Answers huge success affect the companies value? Yahoo's services are growing in strength and popularity, do you think this will raise the value of the stock? Could they be as big as Google? (The services are better) Are you investing in Yahoo?
Are performance of stock derivatives affected if stocks do not perform as expected? Since there are so many derivative products from stocks and many invest in them believing they are safer than investing in stocks, should it be considered a better investment or an additional investment for someone who wants to diversify their portfolio? Also, can you insure these investments from depreciating drastically? What are some investments that carry a safety net, e.g. does not go down more than X% and still X% above initial purchase value? Can you provide an example how an initial investment of $22 Mil yield an annual return of $10 Mil pre tax?
In view of recent rise in Value of Gold how a commoner in India should proceed to sale Gold Ornaments ? Keeping in view of recent rise in value of Gold, many common Indians are considering to encash their Gold Ornaments for investing in Stocks or otherwise. My question is ,how one should ideally proceed for selling of their Gold Ornaments so that there is least possibility of cheat or loss. As a common practice, does one have to compulsorily approach a Gold Smith or a Jewellary Shop for selling Gold Ornaments or are there some Authentic Organisations / Banks who help and guide in selling Gold Ornaments and / or Buy themselves. I had listened some times back about some scheme , in which some Banks help converting Gold Ornaments to Gold Bars and then accept for issuing Gold Bonds. What is that and which Banks are providing such facilities?
Current Market Value of Firm? Hey, I have to calculate the 'Current Market Value' of a firm, and i'm only given this data: Annual net free cash flows are $365000. Risk-free interest rate is 6.25%pa. Total book value of assets of $3.1m. Standard deviation of firms stock return is 27%. Cost of capital of 16% per year. Shareholders represent a total of at least 55% of the equity. Future Value of $1 invested in a similar firm with similar risk: $1.20 in good economy, $0.85 in bad economy. Other company take over bid offer: $11m My problem is, i thought Current Market Value = (Share Price * Number of Shares) + Debt. I think Debt is the book value of 3.1m, but i cant seem to find the price of the shares or how many there are to calculate the equity... Am i on the right track, or have i missed the point completly...? any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Richie

I am trying to find out where you find multiplier factors to value companies - do you know where I can get the I invest in the stock market and would like to know what companies are good value and which ones are not, I have been told these multiplier factors value a company by factoring the profit figures and are different for certain kinds of company ie. 1,2,3,4,5 - does anyone know where I can obtain these - I have tried the financial times and investors chronicle.
Philippine Stock Index - Up and Downs ? In the past six months, I have observed that the Philippine Stock Index went up then down then up then down several times. In the news today, there was a mention of "window dressing" thus the value of shares will go up until the last trading day of December 2007. If you invested in Philippines stocks, would you sell your holdings on the first working day of 2008 ( January 2, 2008 ) ? Kindly state your reason. Thank you. Happy Holidays !

Some questions on investing in stocks? Say I purchase 6896 shares of VitaCube Systems Holdings Inc. for $1.45, totalling ~$10,000. If the share value went up by $0.32, or %22.07 does that mean if I were to sell right now I'd have a net profit of ($10,000 x 1.2207) - $10,000 = $2,207? Say I was using Ameritrade to manage my investment. If they advertise $9.99 internet equity trade, does that mean I will have a gross profit of $2,207 - 9.99? Can someone please explain to me about the actual buying and selling process. Using this link: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=PRH I gathered the numbers from above. I'm confused on the open and close numbers. What is the "open" and what is the "close," I thought stocks were continuous. Is there a "time-out" period or something during trading hours where noone can buy or sell? How do you know what the current price is per share (i.e. every second), is there a free program I can download for this?
