I just read in stock investment for dummies that stock investment is not good for short term.? Short Term-- Less than and year Intermediate Term-- 2 to 5 years. How do I figure out how many shares of a stock can I buy for any given amount, w/o actually buying them? I am a college student, and was given an assignment where I have $100,000 fake dollars and I have to invest in 10 stocks. I have to buy as many shares of each without exceeding the limit. I need an answer that is simple, something along the lines of "Stocks for Dummies". I have been on NASDAQ, NYSE, and YAHOO! FINANCE, and I am just illiterate when it comes to stocks. Thanks

What is a good online stock trading broker? I am currently with sharebuilder, but I do not have any money in my portfolio simply because right now I'm learning by reading their website and some books namely "stock investing for dummies." Anyways from some opinions I have heard about sharebuilder is that it is a great place for the beginning stock trader to begin but some of the drawbacks mentioned were that they have high fees. I wanted to know from anyone that is a novice, intermediate, or very experienced online stock trader which brokers they have used, the pros and cons to each one (ease of use, reasonable fees), and ultimately which broker they currently use.

Investing for Canadian Dummies? I'm wondering about how the best route would be. I currently am 16 years old (and yes, i know, i need to be 18 to get into the stock market or else have someone older such as a guardian sign, etc.) I have saved up roughly $12,000 that I worked for and at the moment I am making 4% interest compounded monthly which comes to $40/month in interest. I am looking for a way to make more cash since i cannot get into the stock market yet. I have tried setting up a few small businesses in the past and have come up with some great product ideas, but obviously none of them took off. I'm pretty much losing my motivation and I don't know where to invest my money. Working at minimum wage just doesn't cut it. It's ridiculous. You cant even buy a 12" subway combo for $8 CAD. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Investing or gambling? I am reading a book called 'Investing for Dummies'. Its about investments and the stock markets and it is very interesting, but what Im seeing and reading, seems to me to be that the stock market and investments around that, are just like gambling.
