Exactly how you make money in the stock market? I get that you buy stocks and the stocks go up or down every day, but why do people leave money in it for longer than a year? If the stock market goes up and down, wouldn't you want to take your money out when it is really high? I don't get why some people would leave money in the stocket market even when it is at a high selling price. Or does the stock market go up and down all the time, but in the end always goes up in price, like anually or something? I know this sort of sounds i little complicated, but its the best i could word it... also...about how much do you get from dividends and are there any safe investment stocks [aka "blue chip" stocksi think they are called] (you dont have to name any if you dont know any, im just wondering) that pay about 5% interest, maybe more?

I just posted this question and i got a few answers telling me that it depends on my tax bracket. My case is I am a fairly young guy and I have been an unemployed full-time student for the last 3 years. I just took $10,000 in cash from my credit card company so i can make some short term (3-9 months) profits. So does that mean i don't have a tax bracket? Am i still gonna pay taxes?

how does someone make money in the stock market if their stock prices never rise?"? I am new to buying some stock but have a huge question. If people buy "solid" stock that never really rise or fall a lot (for example, Apple, Coke, Wal-Mart) how do people make money? Like I said I am new to this but seems to me to make money, your stock has to rise a lot and then you have to sell it to cash in your money. Please any explanations! Thanks for the responses - that makes sense - but now I have another question.... when are the dividends paid out? how are they determined? and do you have to have your stock in their company for a certain period of time? years? months?
Why is it so hard to make money in the stock market, short term? Okay, stocks fluctuate-a lot. Is it that hard to buy a stock when it looks like its at its low for a day and then wait for it to jump back up and sell it an hour later? I mean, it is probably rare that a person buys a stock and the ONLY thing it does from the second the buy it is go lower. Why doesn't everyone just sell it the minute it makes them $10 or more?

Now with this, if the stock goes up $5.00 in one day, does that literally mean that each of your shares has gone up a value of $5 meaning you have profited $2775? (555 shares x $5 profit each) or does it work differently? and also if we do the stock purchasing and things like that online are there lots of fees?

Can I make money, day trading on the stock market? I am a teenager about to graduate high school. I am very interested in the medical field but don't know if I am smart enough to join in on it. My dad is in the stock market and is the day trading type. He gets a hold of a Forbes recommended stock every month and then sells and makes a little "side money" which I know means quite a bit of money to a teenager at least. But what I really want to know is if he teaches me how to use all the tools with Fidelity, and assuming he gives me a substantial amount of money in the fidelity account, can I become a long term stock holder and not even have to go to college to make a very good annual income? What's the likelihood of this? Please help. Ten points for the best answer. Professionals only please. Revised: Can I make a substantial annual income day trading or holding a stock for long periods? My dad has over $500,000.00 in the stock market if this is important.

Will I make more money in the stock market with a divided house? Dead serious on this one. I think I will. I think the market dropped last week after the Kerry inferno. Thanks a lot for blowing that out of proportion. I was wondering if I should pull my pittance out and wait a few days to see if there is an emotional reaction, but I think (hope) it is factored in. The markets actually do better under dems. http://money.cnn.com/2004/01/21/markets/election_demsvreps/
